PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIAN
キリスト教徒の迫害

The following decrees of the Mikado(Sourthen)
against Christianity are published.
キリスト教に対して天皇陛下(南)より以下の政令が発行されました。（当時は北にも天皇がいたので「南」という表記が。これは明治天皇のことです。）

As the abominable religion of the Christians is strictly prohibited, every one shall be bound to denounce to the proper authorities such persons as appear suspicious to him and re reward shall be given to him for so doing and reward shall be given to him for so doing. TAISEIKWAN
忌むべきキリスト教は厳しく、禁止されています。みなさんは、キリスト教徒の疑いがあるような人を正式な役所に告発するべきです。また、告発した場合には報奨金を得られます。太政官。（太政官とは、日本の明治維新政府に設けられた官庁名）

Although the sect of the Christians has been already centuries ago persecuted most rigorously by the Bankfu Government, its entire extermination had not been arrived at. 
キリスト教は数世紀もの間、幕府によって厳しく迫害されていますが、まだ根絶には至っていません。

As, however, the number of followers of Christian doctrine had lately considerably augmented in the village of Urakama, near Nagasaki, whose peasants secretly adhere to it, after mature consideration it has been ordered by the highest authority that Christians shall be taken into custody according to the rules laid down in the annexed document.
小作農の隠れキリスチャンがいる長崎の近くにある浦上という村で、キリスト信者がかなり議論している時です。熟慮したうえで、権力者が下記の但し書きと共に「キリスト教徒は逮捕されるべき」と命令しました。

Annexe - As the Christian doctrine has has been prohibited in this country since the oldest time, this matter ought not to lightly treated. 
但し書き
キリスト教は、この国では昔から禁止されており、その問題は軽く扱われるべきものではない。

Those to whose custody Christians shall be confided shall therefore instruct them of what is right, with leniency and humanity, and shall do their best to again make good men of them. 
保護されているクリスチャンであることを打ち明けられた人は、彼らに慈悲と人間愛をもって、何が正しいかを彼らに指示しなければいけません。そして最善を尽くして、再び彼らを真人間にすべきです。

But if some should not repent and acknowledge their errors, they shall be most severely punished without any mercy. 
しかし、もし、過ちを認めないで悔い改めないならば、慈悲なく厳しい罰を受けます。

Those whom it concerns shall keep this well in mind, and denounce to the proper authorities everyone who shall prove incorrigible. 
その問題に関係を持つものは、それをよく覚えておくべきです。また、手に負えないとわかった者は、必ず、適切な役所に告発すべきです。

Those men(The Christians) until they have repented, shall not be allowed to have any intercourse with the inhabitants or the places where they are consigned.
クリスチャンは悔い改めるまで、地域の住人や彼らが引き渡された場所で、セックスすることは全く、許されない。

They shall be used to clear land or for work in the lime-pits, or the gold and coal mines, or for any work their officers may think fit to employ them on.
クリスチャンは土地を掃除する、石灰の採掘場で働く、金や石炭の鉱山で働く、などなど、彼らの主人が彼らに適していると考えるであろう場所で、使役させられる。

They shall live in the mountains and forests.
クリスチャンは山と森林に住む。

One portion of rice shall be allowed per head to the respective Daimios, for the space of three years.
3年の間、一人当たり一人前のご飯を各大名に与える。

They shall be brought in small detachments to the places mentioned below.
クリスチャンは、下記に言及する隔離された場所に必ず連れていかれます。

  The Daimios shall as soon as they receive the information of the persons allotted to them , send soldiers to take them over. 
大名は割り当てられた人の情報を受け取ったら、直ちに、彼らを引き取るために、必ず兵隊を派遣しなければならない。

The above Imperial orders are hereby published for observances.
上記の帝からの通達は、これによって、遵守すべきとして発行される。

The following Daimios shall take over the Christians allotted to them at their respective palaces at Osaka.
以下の大名は割当てられたクリスチャンを、大阪にある各々の場所に、必ず引き取らなければならない。

Here follows a List of Daimios, 34 in all and a list of allotments to each, being 4,100 persons allotted to the Daimios, in companies of 100 or 250 each.
以下にあるのが大名のリストです。全部で34。それぞれに割当てられたリストは、各一団ごとに100から250人が割当てられ、合計で4100人になります。

私見
わざわざ、南の天皇陛下と書かれているのが面白いですね。
DaimiosとかBankfuとかのスペルも興味深いです（笑）
　それはさておき、キリスト教徒の迫害に関連して思い出されるのは、島原の乱でしょう。江戸時代初期、1637年に天草四郎が起こしたキリスチャンの反乱です。それから、230年間もの間、江戸幕府はキリスト教徒を禁止していたようです。それも凄いが、それでも根絶できてなかったのも、また凄い。キリスト教の人気は根強いんですね〜。島原と浦上は両方とも今の長崎市。この辺りにいたキリスト教徒は、島原の乱以降もクリスチャンであり続けたんでしょうか。
　そんな状況のなか、明治維新がおこり新政府の登場。そして、文明開化、欧米化。だが、しかし、キリスト教はやっぱり禁止みたいです（笑）「セックスは禁止」なんて辺りも、なんか怖いですね。お前らは子孫を残すな的な。
　実は、こういう奴隷制度的な話が、明治維新にもあったのは意外でした。確か、教科書ではキリスト教徒の話は、江戸時代以降は出てこなくったはずです。まさか、まさか、欧米化が始まった明治にも、こんな血なまぐさい話があろうとは。明治が新時代の幕開けというわけでは、必ずしもそうではなさそうですね。

江戸時代のキリスト教徒の迫害について書かれている本はこちら。 本当は忍者の漫画なんですけど、サスケシリーズの後半はキリスト教徒の迫害の話も出てきます。 磔とか火あぶりとか。ただの漫画だなぁ〜とサラっと読んでいましたが、こういう話もあったのかもしれません。
